Won't Bag Leaves period !

Salesman talked me into replacing my old X-304 with a new X-354 JD rider . Worst mistake I ever made . Bagger system on my old JD X-304 worked great . Bagged with ease. The new X-354 doesn"t bag worth a pinch of salt. 90% of leaves and dust go on top of deck , all over neighborhood , in my lungs , anywhere but up the bagger, you get the picture. You apparently can buy an add on blower attachment for the deck that forces the leaves to go up the chute into bagger , since they obviously know they have a design flaw problem with this mower bagging wise, but that adds an extra 8" in width to your rider making it impossible for me to get between fence and some trees. If you have a lot of trees and leaves to deal with stay clear of buying this Model of JD Mower !

4 Wheel Steer is a good Compromise

Bought this a month ago. I really like the 4-Wheel Steer feature. It is a great compromise of regular 2-wheel steering vs zero-turn-radius steering. I have some steep parts of my yard that a ZTR would have trouble mowing, but 4WS handles it well, plus 4WS saves time mowing around smaller trees or sharper corners. I also ordered a mulch kit and bagger kit, both work well. When I ordered this 42 inch deck, I did not realize I could not fully raise the discharge chute due to the mower body width, which forces which direction I mow when next to flower beds, etc. (whether I'm mulching or not). It also takes up a bit more room in the garage since cannot fully raise the chute. I think the price was on the high side, hopefully the mower will have much lower maintenance and repair costs in the long run to support the higher price.

Good on the flats - poor on the slope

The mower has been dependable and is very comfortable ride. Wife is enjoying using it. We believe we purchased the wrong one though because the deck sinks on the downslope side when mowing and carves about to 1-2" scalp line across the yard when riding on a slope. None of the adjustments I have made will make it go away. I would give it 5 stars if it did a better job with the cut on the slope. Great on the flat and going uphill or downhill. Poor cut when mowing parallel with the slope.

X354 Pro and Cons

Pros The Lawn Tractor seems to have enough power. But, it is interesting that most of the time, the throttle has to be at max. The Transmission is smooth and provides a feeling of control in both forward and reverse. We have some steep culverts and we could feel the transmission grab and keep the mower moving. Some Cons, the belt for the mower deck came off and it took over an hour of rolling around on the ground, trying to figure out how to put it back on. There is a diagram on the deck for the belt but it could have been more clear and this added to confusion. Also, the mower deck, where the belt runs, regularly gets full of grass and this is a concern as the belt will pop off. Also, the mower deck, where the grass comes out, gets clogged pretty often. Have to stop and clear it out. We have no idea how to change the blades and the installation guide provides no information about changing the blades. Also, after making a purchase we found a competitor Tractor Mower for almost $1,500 less, with more horsepower, and a large mower deck, so we felt the price was high for the John Deere. Overall the Tractor mower cranks through our almost 5 acres of grass that needs to be cut. If anything, I might have to move up to the 700 series for more power and a larger deck. Worth noting I purchased the X354 and do not have any reference to any other 300 series, but the ability to make tight turns, as the X354 has a steering feature, is nice, around trees, and is a nice feature overall. Overall the X254 has been good, is fun to ride, and gets the job of mowing the lawn done. One regret was not upping to the large 48-inch deck. But I feel that with the power of the X354, moving to the 700 series would be necessary to run the large deck effectively.
