Buying used equipment can be a cost-effective way to expand your fleet or to get your hands on your first piece of equipment. That said, it can be intimidating to purchase used equipment, especially if you don’t know what signs to look for. At Wright Implement, we’re dedicated to getting your hands on the best equipment for your needs, and that means thoroughly inspecting all equipment that comes through our shop so you can rest easy knowing that we’re familiar with your machine’s history. Below, we’ve put together some key inspection tips for those looking to inspect used equipment before making a purchase.

Find Your Nearest Wright Implement

1. Research the Equipment's History

If you have a specific piece of used equipment in mind, do some research on that make and model before visiting the lot. Take note of common issues, potential recalls, or other weaknesses or complaints about that machine. That way, you’ll have a better idea of what to keep an eye out for when you’re checking out your equipment. If you’re shopping at Wright Implement, ask us for a maintenance record to understand more about the machine’s history.

2. Check for Visible Signs of Wear

Conduct a thorough walk-around inspection. Here are some common checkpoints to look for:

  • Signs of rust, cracks, or weld marks which may indicate past damage or repairs.
  • Worn-out tires or tracks that may need replaced.
  • Fluid leakage under the machine, which would be a red flag for hydraulic or engine issues.

3. Inspect the Engine and Hydraulics

The engine and hydraulic system are the most vital part of any piece of equipment. Keep an eye out for:

  • Excessive smoke when the engine starts.
  • Unusual noises such as knocking or grinding.
  • Proper fluid levels and hydraulic hose condition.

4. Test the Equipment in Action

If possible, reach out to the seller and request a test drive. When testing used equipment, pay attention to these key details:

  • Ensure that all functions operate as expected.
  • Check for any unusual vibrations or unwanted resistance.
  • Double-check that all controls, safety features, and hydraulic systems are in working order.

5. Review Hours of Operation

On heavy equipment, hours of operation are like miles on a car. Total operating hours can be a good indicator of the used machine’s remaining lifespan. Compare these hours to the industry standard, or reach out to an expert to assess if the machine’s wear aligns with its usage hours.

6. Verify Title and Ownership Documents

Ensure that the equipment has a clear title and that there are no outstanding liens–if you’re purchasing through Wright Implement, we’ve already done all of this work for you. Always ensure that the seller can provide all necessary ownership information and proof of purchase.

7. Consult an Expert

This is where we come in! Even after you’ve conducted visual and test-driving inspections, it’s still important to seek the opinions of an expert. At Wright Implement, we have an extensive network of dealers and technicians to inspect all used equipment that comes through our stores.
